My wife went to a cookie exchange last night. She spent the afternoon baking three different kinds of cookies (chocolate chip, sugar, and rice krispy treats). She decorated the cookies with various colors of sprinkles. Then she asked me to put the icing on top. It was a large tube, similar to a tube of toothpaste. I snipped the tip off of the icing tube, and went to town.
The first few cookies got splattered with green icing as I was learning how much pressure to use to squeeze the tube. By the time I reached the last few cookies I was drawing smiley faces, stars, and polka dots. It was a lot of fun.
Then I bit into one of the freshly decorated cookies. It tasted “funny.” It was more than just the extra sugar from the icing. I think because the icing hadn’t hardened, it was too squishy, making for a funny texture in my mouth.
But today when I tried a cookie, they were fantastic. The icing had firmed up, and wasn’t as sweet. And while it didn’t quite crunch, it was definitely something extra and separate from the cookie itself. I really like the cookies today, even though I had to wait until they were ready.
And that’s similar to Christmas. We have to wait until it’s ready. Give it some time, it will arrive. And it will be firmed up, ready to be enjoyed.
