Gifts

Ask most kids their thoughts about Christmas, and you’ll get a quick response: a glowing face and breathless explanation of what they think Christmas is about: the gifts they will receive.

I will never forget the year that my brother snuck down to the Christmas tree to scout the gifts that Santa left for us. He came back and breathlessly exclaimed “you got a telescope!” I thought that was very cool. For the next few hours we waited for my parents to awaken (I’m sure it was probably minutes, but it felt like hours) I imagined looking at the moon, the planets, and stars. And imagine my thrill when my “telescope” ended up being a “microscope.” It was a cool present and I enjoyed looking at things through it. (And I’ve still got it down in the basement). Now that I’m older, I enjoy giving gifts more than receiving them. Giving gifts is a way for me to show my love for my family or friend. I’m not sure when my mindset changed. But I’m glad I am able to give.

“It is more blessed to give than to receive” – Acts 20:35
