Do you believe in Santa Claus? I’ve never seen him. Everyone tells kids to write their letter to Santa. There are lots of legends surrounding him. He is surrounded by miraculous beings (elves, reindeer that can fly, a red-nosed reindeer) and has astounding powers (he can see all the children in the world, and know if they are nice or naughty; he can visit every child’s home in one night). He’s also very kind and generous.
I’m reminded of the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip. Calvin is expressing his doubts about Santa. Their conversation closes with Calvin saying “And if He doesn’t exist, what’s the meaning of all this?” Hobbes replies “I dunno… Isn’t this a religious holiday?” And Calvin showing wisdom beyond his years says “Yeah, but I’ve got the same questions about God.”
Believing in Santa is hard work. As is believing in God. Both require a strong faith in the face of numerous doubters, skeptics and others that are hostile to your beliefs.
